Can
you think of one person who has not been touched in some way by cancer? Imagine
a world where the diagnosis of cancer doesn’t cause gut-wrenching fear, a world
where cancer treatments are individualized for each patient, a world where there
is hope. Davenport native Dr. Laura Shawver has dedicated her life to creating
this change and to providing more cures today. CEO
of Phenomix Corporation, which develops drugs for unmet medical needs, Dr. Shawver
sits on the Science Policy Committee for the American Association for Cancer Research,
and helped spearhead Hollywood’s Stand Up 2 Cancer Campaign. Dr. Shawver’s life
work became very personal in 2007 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
She learned first-hand the limitations in cancer diagnosis and treatment, and,
in response, founded The Clearity Foundation, helping to provide molecular profiling
for ovarian cancer patients. An
experienced surfer, Dr. Shawver compares her passion for riding the waves to her
biotech research. “You’re always trying to catch the wave. For me, I’d rather
ride a bigger wave with the risk of wiping out than hop on a small one.” Join
The Women’s Connection on September 23 to hear Dr. Shawver’s stories from 25 years
as a scientist, biotech executive, cancer survivor and philanthropist, and learn
how she’s taking cancer head-on to change our world. View Dr. Shawver on YouTube.com. Exclusive
